The Causes of a Mood Disorder During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life, but it can also be one of the most scary, tense, nervous, and emotional times. TV shows and movies often touch upon a woman’s mood swings during pregnancy for very good reason. Because the female body is going through many changes during pregnancy, there are bound to be emotional and hormonal changes as well. But what exactly causes these changes in mood during pregnancy

The typical mood changes during pregnancy are caused by anything from fatigue, to physical stress, changes in metabolism, or by hormone levels. When hormone levels change drastically, it can affect the neurotransmitters in your brain, chemicals that regulate the mood. Usually, most of the mood swings are experienced during the first trimester when your body begins to prepare for the pregnancy, and then again in the third trimester, when your body prepares for birth. These mood swings can be slight or have you feeling one extreme to another. Not only does this make things hard for you, but for your friends and family around you as well.

Mood swings, however, are normal during pregnancy. To help manage the level of stress you may experience during pregnancy, it’s recommended that you get plenty of sleep at night and relaxation during the day, engage in regular physical activity, and eat properly. The occasional massage or warm bath is a great way to relax, while a walk around the neighborhood and meals with the freshest ingredients can have a considerable effect on your mood during these long 9 months. These few simple changes to your daily lifestyle during pregnancy will help combat the normal mood swings.
