Mood Disorders and Sleep

Mood and sleep disorders are a bad combination but they’re common in many people, especially the elderly. The good news is that you can resolve this problem just by changing the way you sleep.

Mood disorders are present in one-third to one-half of patients having chronic sleep problems. Many patients with mood disorders suffer from insomnia. Sadly, this problem is often undiagnosed. That’s why its best to be aware of any sleep problems to alert one of possible mood disorders.

Surprisingly, reduced sleep can also trigger mood disorders. Studies show that 25 to 65 percent of bipolar patients with a manic episode experienced a social rhythm disruption before the episode. Social rhythm disruption is a disturbance in the sleepwake cycle. Watching a late night movie, online chatting, a serious health problem or a death in the family can cause this disruption.
